Hello sailors!
The LMH Nautical Group has passed its first birthday! This is an opportunity to look back at what we have done since we started and look forward to the next year’s activities.
Early activities included a group visit to the Windermere Jetty Museum and a demonstration of net-making by a member who used to be a fisherman on the Northeast coast. Periodically we have a go at decorative ropework (Turks Heads, monkey’s fists etc.). To be honest, it’s more difficult than we thought and so success has been limited; we will keep trying! Other highlights were two excellent talks on boatbuilding and shipbuilding by John Martin, a shipwright retired from BAe at Barrow. We even had the First Annual LMH Crafty Raft Race!
Amongst other things we plan visits to the Western Approaches Museum in Liverpool, Sunderland Maritime Heritage Trust and Ullswater to try sailing, weather permitting!
